Community CCTV Camera Mapping Application

by Kirsty Wilson working at Northumbrian Police, Force Transformation Team responding to Cross-cutting challenge areas

I am interested in exploring

Solutions around the creation of a mobile tool for police officers allowing access to CCTV camera locations & information sharing. This application will serve as a platform for engaging the public about: • Greater sharing of digital imagery • A multi-agency approach to the distribution of digital imagery • Ability to better protect & safeguard communities • Improved detection of crime • Improved processes for the prevention of crime • Improved quality of investigations & justifiable conviction rates • Greater levels of customer satisfaction, public trust & confidence within policing • Reduced fear of victimization The social impact of the proposal is that the general public are assured in criminal justice & support agencies being able to protect the communities they exist to serve. Additional confidence in the police that they are able to meet the security needs of the general public, whilst simultaneously protecting data.

My motivation is

We have an abundance of digital imagery available yet, neighborhood & response police officers struggle to locate & access this information quickly resulting in reduced service levels for the communities of the North East. There is a technological disconnect between the data that is currently available & the officers who are ‘on the beat’, who may be managing a situation in-situ with victims & suspect offenders. We aim to provide officers with a tool for accessing digital image repositories via their mobile devices enabling immediate & direct access, better equiping officers to fulfill their role in protecting the public. Through the development of the tool we will engage with stakeholders & general public around current CCTV technology uses, receptiveness, legislation & the implications of mapping. We will also explore attitudes & perceptions towards emerging technologies within this field, to facilitate discussions towards the co-design of fairer & more transparent processes.
